It is not known when rope was invented, but it was used by most ancient civilizations. The first types of ropes were probably vines or other types of long plants. After a while, early men started to combine natural fibers to make the first true man made ropes.

The first ropes were made of materials such as cotton, hemp, water reed, etc. They proved extremely useful and versatile in pretty much every aspect of work in those times.

Centuries later, with the era of industrialization came, new materials were discovered and developed, with properties that performed better than old natural materials. New types of ropes were created as people came up with the idea of using new fibers for rope building. That’s how nylon rope was born.

Out of all the synthetic ropes, nylon rope is by far the most common one. It has several qualities that make it more appropriate to most rope applications than other types of rope.

First of all, nylon rope is the strongest of all fiber ropes. The only thing that is stronger is wire rope, which is a metal rope, not a fiber rope, and it’s much more expensive, yet not as flexible as nylon rope. Because of this, it’s used in applications were both strength and flexibility are important, such as boating, fishing, farming, light towing, etc.

Another advantage of nylon rope is that it’s also very resistant to weather conditions. While iron rusts and natural fibers break down with water and temperature variations, nylon ropes keep their qualities under heating sun or freezing cold.

In addition to being strong and weather resistant, nylon rope is also very elastic. When subject to extreme tension, it will extend up to 46% of its size before breaking. This now only makes it flexible and adaptable, but it also gives plenty of warning to operators and users so they can stop the tension if they don’t want to stretch it to breaking point. Just a word of caution, if a nylon rope is stretched to such limits, it will continue to work normally, but it should be replaced if the application might result in an injury or damage to equipment if it should break.

Finally, nylon rope is just a bit denser than water, which means it will sink. This makes nylon rope very useful in water applications, since it won’t develop mold or any other form of life. It is particularly useful in anchor warping. Of course, it’s also great for handling the sails and pretty much any other boat application.

Even with the coming of several types of new synthetic fibers, cotton continues to hold its own due to the many benefits it brings.

Likewise, when it comes to ropes, cotton rope is still a strong contender despite the competition of new types of ropes, such as nylon rope, as well as competition from old traditional rope, such as hemp rope.

Cotton rope is very popular in some applications, in . For example, in hammocks.

Hammocks are very common in warm weather. They are synonym of comfort and rest. When people think of hammocks, they never picture them in a house in the city. It’s always next to the sea, with a cocktail drink nearby, the sound of gulls and the waves breaking against the beach and specially, not a worry in the world. While this stereotype is somewhat valid, hammocks can also be used in other environments for comfort. It is certainly quite restful to take a nap in one of them in a sunny afternoon. You can also enjoy the rest while reading a good book

While there are polyester rope hammocks, cotton rope hammocks are preferred over them. First of all, cotton rope hammocks are the most comfortable hammocks there are, beating easily any other type of hammock in the market. That is because cotton is both soft and somewhat elastic. In addition, cotton rope hammocks are natural. Therefore, they won’t pollute the environment when they’ve reached the end of their useful life.

Cotton rope hammocks are also comfortable because cotton “breathes,” which means that it lets air go trough. That way, it lets both the air come to us and our perspiration to escape. Other types of hammocks don’t have this property, which means that they won’t let our skin perspire as well and we’ll end up sweaty. In addition, this makes it uncomfortable for the next person that uses the hammock.

Another quality of cotton rope is that it’s resistant enough to hold a person, yet it isn’t entangling and it pulls apart rather easily, which means that your dogs or children can get free of them if they accidentally trap themselves in a cotton rope hammock.

Lastly, cotton is very light. Therefore, cotton rope hammocks are easy to carry around and install in places temporally. That way, that space becomes available for use again once the hammock is removed.

So, even if you don’t live by the sea, as long as you have a nice yard where it’s nice in the summer, consider getting yourself one of these hammocks. They’re not really expensive and you’ll be treating yourself.

Hemp is one of the plants that have been used for the longest time in human history. There are records of hemp use by the Chinese that go back as far as 10,000 years.

The name hemp makes reference to the Cannabis genus, although it is more commonly associated with the species that are used for industrial production.

The fiber of hemp, which is sometimes called bast, is probably the first material that was used to make man made ropes. Hemp rope proved to be incredibly popular and useful for centuries. It was a basic tool for almost every daily work activity, like fishing, hunting, building, sailing, etc. And as civilizations grew bigger and more complex, they came up with new uses, applications, or inventions for hemp rope. For example, pulleys, bridges, and gate opening mechanisms used hemp rope due to its flexibility and strength. Perhaps the most somber application of hemp rope was to be used for hanging prisoners, criminals, or war or political enemies.

It wasn’t until the 18 th century, when new natural and synthetic materials were developed, that hemp rope started to be replaced by other types of rope. Albaca and manila started to be used for rope making, and then, when synthetic materials came, nylon and polyester ropes became the norm for the most demanding of jobs.

Nevertheless, even after the arrival of these materials, hemp rope is still popular in several parts of the world because it’s cheap to produce and easy to manufacture. And for the people who have kept a style of life that included hemp rope, it makes no sense to get a more expensive type of rope when the one they’ve been using for years works just fine.

For a natural fiber rope, hemp rope is extremely resistant and durable. It is not only able to hold a very good amount of weight, but it is also strong against ultraviolet rays and mold.

In order to keep hemp rope in good conditions, some people tarnish it with linseed oil and gum turpentine. This mix will retain the qualities of a hemp rope for a long time. In the past, before such solutions were available, sailors would tar their ropes in order to keep them from rotting in middle of the sea. This was a common task for them, and had to be done constantly, since the ropes were the ones that held the sails together. In addition, they were used for fastening cargo and directing the ship, so it was a very important chore to keep them in good state.

Hemp rope is not as common as it used to be, but it refuses to die. Only time will tell if hemp will survive or become a souvenir from the past.

Rope is one of the most ancient tools used by early men and ancient civilizations. Most likely, the first ropes were just natural vines that men used for pulling loads. Later on, these fibers were interwoven with others to form the earliest man made ropes. While these were very weak compared to today standards, they were more useful and resistant than natural vines, and performed better.

As groups of men gathered together and different activities started to appear, rope was increasingly used in several applications. When animals started to be gathered and have owners, ropes were used to keep them from escaping. Farming and food gathering became more efficient when ropes were used to pull bigger loads. And when men started to develop spears for hunting and war making, piercing objects were fastened to long poles with rope. Given all of these, it can be said that the invention of rope was as important as the discovery of fire and the wheel for the development of early human groups.

In fact, the activity of rope making and the techniques of rope use also advanced with time. Since ropes are not very useful without rope knots, workers started to experiment with new ways of entangling rope in order to get a better grip.

Over the millennia, this resulted in several types of rope knots that have different characteristics and properties. Rope knots are so important that learning them and their different applications is an important part of the training of several professions, such as scouts, climbers, firemen, soldiers, sailors, etc. In some professions, for example firemen, it’s very important to decide with very little time the types of rope knots that are useful for a given situation and being able to do it in very little time. Also, it is not a secret that boy scouts and similar associations teach how to do rope knots to their members.

While most of us only know how to make the rope knots that tie our shoes, it can be useful to know a couple more. Many times, drivers who fasten loads on top of their cars lose them because they used the same rope knots that they use on their shoes. Not only they lose their load, they also create a big safety risk for the passengers of the cars behind them.

If you would like to know more about rope knots, you can find several books on them. Some of them are simple and teach you the basics, and others are aimed at the expert rope worker that knows the difference between a loop, an elbow, and a bight. You can also find videos on the Internet that show you how to tie various rope knots step by step. It isn’t really difficult, it just takes some practice.
